Live-in eller live-out?

There are two types of nanny positions to choose between. Either you can be a live-in nanny, which means the family provides you with accommodation, or you can be a live-out nanny/daily nanny, which means you come to the family household to work every day.

Live-in nanny

A live-in nanny lives in the home of the employing family and works there full-time, generally about 40-50 hours, five days a week. The nanny will be provided with her/his separate room (which usually comes with a TV) and bathroom or in some cases a separate nanny flat. As a live-in nanny the food is also provided and paid for by the employer. The salary will be lower for a live-in nanny as she/he will be provided for with accommodation and food as part of the salary. Weekends are usually free, but some families will expect you to babysit 1-2 evenings a week which will be included in the weekly salary. A live-in position is a great option if you are coming to live in London for the first time.

As a live-in nanny you are expected to be in charge of all nursery duties of the children only. You are not expected to do any household duties, cleaning or cooking for the family.

Live-in nanny positions can either be sole charge, where both parents are working full-time or shared charge, where the nanny is expected to work alongside the parents or if one parent works from home.

Live-out nanny/ Daily nanny

As a live-out/daily nanny you don’t live with the family, instead you come to the family to work every day. The standard working hours for a daily nanny are usually 10 hours a day (Monday to Friday- usually between 8-6). Daily nannies are not expected to do babysitting in the evenings as part of their salary, but can do so if paid extra and if agreed upon in advance.

As a daily nanny you are expected to be in charge of all nursery duties of the children only.

Live-out nanny positions can either be sole charge, where both parents are working full-time or shared charge, where the nanny is expected to work alongside the parents or if one parent works from home.
