Why work as a nanny in London?
Working as a nanny in London is definitely going to be one of those experiences in life you will never forget. It will give you new prospects of life and open up your eyes to other job opportunities you never really thought of. In Sweden the need for a full-time nanny is not as big as in the UK, since we have a very generous childcare system. In the UK, on the other hand, childcare is VERY expensive and there are many families that find having a full-time nanny to look after their children is the best childcare option for them. The nanny profession is a well accepted profession in the UK, and the salary can be very high for the right person with the right childcare qualification.
You may want to work as a nanny in London for only a year, getting a great experience working closely with a family and their children and experiencing living in one of the best cities in the world. There is, after all, a reason why thousands of Swedes move to London to work for a few years. London is a fantastic city! It’s the perfect “break” if you want to do something different in your life and experience a bit of the world, but still have a serious job. London is one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities; you will meet people from all around the world in one big place. So instead of spending all that money on travelling around the world – move to London and let the world come to you!
And who knows, a year may become 2, 3, 4 or 7 years? (We’re only talking from experience!)
London – The “child friendly” city
London transport is great which means you can easily get around the city with children and a buggy on buses and the tube. London is also “the city of nannies”, which means there are lots of free play classes and usually the family is more than happy to pay for fun music classes, etc, for you and the child to go together. Most families give you the full responsibility to put up a fun activity schedule for the child/children. There are always lots of fun things happening in a big city like London. Not to mention, THE PARKS and all the fun playgrounds around London!! What’s better than bringing a picnic basket with you to the playground, and socialise with all the other children and their nannies.
Looks good on CV
A year or a few years work abroad not only gives you lots of new knowledge and great experience, it also looks good on your CV! It shows that you are a person who is flexible and adaptable, and who wants to develop and grow both professionally and personally. It also shows that you are not afraid to move out of your comfort zone or being exposed to new work situations and a new culture! Not to mention, your language skills will definitely be an advantage. Being fluent in English is never a bad thing!!
Last but not least; you don’t have to worry about having a gap in your pension for one or several years if you move to London to work as a nanny. When the family employs you as a nanny, they are responsible for paying your income tax and national insurance contributions to the state. Once you reach your pension age, all the contributions you payed in to the UK State will be transferred into the Swedish pension system. You just have to make sure you’ll keep all the P45 and P6o’s that the family will provide you.
